Boost Metabolism, Lose Weight With Hot Pepper
Not long ago I read an article (nothing high-brow, People perhaps?) featuring the super-gorgeous Halle Berry.
Halle explained to all us mere mortals how she keeps her remarkable bod in stellar shape (apparently, even those blessed with perfect genetics have a trick or two).
Here’s the thing: Halle adds cayenne pepper to her morning protein shakes!
Now why is it that I remember this tidbit of information? Well, I think maybe it’s because it struck me as being so utterly disgusting. A frothy cayenne pepper shake? No thanks. But the article did prompt me to do further investigation into hot peppers and how they can aid weight loss and stimulate metabolism.
How Does Red Pepper Encourage Weight Loss?
Hot peppers owe their fat-fighting, metabolic-boosting properties to a compound called capsaicin. If you’ve ever eaten a burrito worth its salsa, chances are good that you’re already familiar with capsaicin - it’s what gives hot peppers that fiery flavor. It appears capsaicin is able to decrease hunger by blunting the hunger message the intestines send to the brain. Capsaicin can also increase metabolism by raising your internal temperature. It’s not just your mouth that feels hot when you eat jalapenos– your entire body responds by generating heat!
Who Else Is Fired Up About Hot Peppers?
Halle isn’t the only one who thinks peppers are hot.
Dr. Perricone: A diet that incorporates chili peppers, cayenne pepper, chili powder and red pepper flakes is highly recommended by one of my all-time favorite guys – Dr. Nicholas Perricone. In “The Perricone Promise: Look Younger, Live Longer in 3 Easy Steps”, Dr. P extols the virtues of this cadre of hotties.
Dr. Mehmet Oz and Dr. Michael Roizen: In their bestselling book “YOU: On A Diet”, America’s two favorite MD’s suggest adding a bit of red pepper at breakfast to fire up metabolism and help quell hunger all day long.
ABC Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry (March 21,2007 reports lab experiments in Taiwan reveal capsaicin actually reduces the growth of fat cells).
Hot Stuff
Using a bit of red pepper in your morning meal is a natural, easy, and delicious way to fire up weight loss and metabolism.
Just so we’re clear, this does NOT mean that you’ll lose even MORE weight if you burn out the roof of your mouth, so no need to start making red pepper pancakes. Just try a dash of red pepper in your eggs or omelet.
If you are pressed for time in the mornings simply sprinkle red pepper or a dash of hot tabasco sauce on a hard boiled egg. And don’t let me dissuade you, if you’re adventurous GO ahead and give Halle’s early-morning cayenne pepper smoothie a try. Yeesh, shiver.
Don’t worry if you just can’t get into daybreak hot pepper fare. You’ll still reap benefits if you can manage to incorporate a bit more kick into other meals.
Some suggestions:
Sprinkle whole wheat spaghetti and marinara with red pepper flakes.
Add a few sliced jalapeno peppers to your burrito or top it with hot salsa
Use red pepper along with olive oil and other spices to marinate chicken breasts or tofu.
Create gourmet air-popped popcorn with a drizzle of olive oil and a dash of red pepper flakes.
Hot Hot Hot!!! You and me - just like Halle !

I thought the purpose of hot pepper was to let you drink more water and eat less. Thanks for sharing this.

I’ve also seen some people add pepper in their food. I’ve heard that they said it’s for weight loss, but I was wondering how it works. Now I know how. Thanks..

Just my luck, I’m in a bit of trouble, I have had my iphone 3G for the past couple of years and it’s been pretty good. It’s my understanding that Apple has a new operating system due out called OS 4 and it’s supposed to be adding some new bells & whistles to the Apple iPhone. I actually just bought Verizon’s new HTC Incredible the HTC Incredible and it is a truly great phone, far superior to the Apple 3G, BUT I’m hearing that Apple is going to be coming out with a brand iphone altogether, and it’s supposed to be really nice but no one has any ideas as to when and Apple isn’t saying a thing. Should I keep my HTC Incredible, that I have 30 days to test and send it back if I do not want to keep it, or should I return it, keep my current iphone and wait for the release for the new iPhone- tough to make up my mind.
