When we pack on the pounds, we often blame it on eating too many carbohydrates. But not all carbs are loaded with starchy calories. And if you severely limit how many carbs you eat — to the point where even a dry cracker seems like a splurge — you’ll be missing some of the tastiest, most nutritious, and, yes, most slimming foods around.

1. Calming comfort
When was the last time you had the flu and craved a steak?

When we don’t feel well, we usually reach for the comforting starches such as pasta and rice we were given as kids. Complex carbohydrates, such as whole grain breads and cereals with oats or other whole grains, stimulate the brain to produce a neurotransmitter called serotonin. Serotonin is the feel-good hormone that helps regulate our mood, sleep and appetite. It also helps fight pain. Other serotonin-inducing carbs include whole wheat pastas, brown rice, bulgur and sweet potatoes.

2. Satisfyingly slimming
Doughnuts may never be health food, but carbohydrates typically contain only four calories per gram. Most foods that are naturally high in complex carbohydrates (broccoli, red, green and yellow peppers, beans, corn and brown rice) are not calorie-dense, yet they are filling and satisfying. That’s why cutting carbs from your diet when you’re trying to lose weight can be counter-productive.

A recommended serving is either one slice of bread, 1/3 cup of rice or 1/2 cup of cooked cereal such as oatmeal.

3. Fiber-rific
Many carbs are low in sugar and rich in fiber. In addition to helping you feel full, fiber gives you lots of other important health benefits.

Insoluble fiber (known as roughage) aids in digestion and can help prevent constipation. Wheat bran and whole wheat products, which are complex carbohydrates, are sources of insoluble fiber.

Soluble fiber, found in oats, carrots, and apples, forms a viscous gel which helps to decrease the absorption of cholesterol, which can lower your risk of heart disease and stroke. Soluble fiber may also help stabilize blood glucose levels and help control diabetes.

To get your daily fiber load, switch to whole grain burger buns and whole wheat pasta. Try experimenting with some new grains like quinoa, amaranth and wheat berries. It’s recommended that adult women consume 21 to 25 grams of dietary fiber per day; men should get 30 to 38 grams. Examples of some fiber-filled foods include one slice of whole grain bread (3 grams) and 1/2 cup serving size of lentils.

4. Beat hunger
If you want to fight hunger pangs, make room for resistant starch in your diet. Resistant starch is a kind of dietary fiber found in many carbohydrates like potatoes, barley and beans. Resistant starches are formed when these foods are cooked and cooled, such as cooked-and-chilled potatoes. This nutrient may play a significant role in promoting weight loss by helping stave off cravings.

Although it’s not clear how much resistant starch we need each day, it can improve blood sugar levels and may even protect against certain cancers.

5. Energy booster
Complex carbohydrates provide a powerhouse of easily-obtained energy. In fact, they are the body’s main source of fuel for your muscles. It’s not only your muscles that benefit — your brain, bones, glands, hormones, heart and all of your body’s systems depend on a regular flow of carb energy to function optimally.

Whether you’re a fitness fan or would simply like to be more active, the intake of the right carbohydrates can really give you a competitive edge.

Energizing snacks include whole grain crackers with nut butter; fruit slices dipped in low-fat yogurt; or hummus with baby carrots. After a workout, you can refuel with a slice of whole grain bread and a string cheese, or a smoothie with skim milk, your favorite fruit and a few ice cubes.

6. Natural healing
Many people don’t realize that “good” carbs — including brown rice, celery, whole grains and strawberries — supply a wealth of vitamins, such as B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B5 (pantothenic acid), and C, in addition to minerals, such as chromium, manganese and zinc. Enriched grains are also a good source of folic acid and iron. Since carbs tend to be of plant origin, many provide a host of phytonutrients (chemicals in plants that boost health).

Examples of some of these super-charged foods and their disease-fighting chemicals include spinach (lutein targets eye-related ailments), tomatoes (lycopene fights prostate cancer) and sweet potatoes (carotenoids have been linked to longer life).

Raw almond lovers are grieving.

As of September 2007, The California Almond Board will require that ALL almonds sold commercially will be heat treated, aka pasteurized. This requirement is effectually the death knell of the truly raw almond.

While you may still see almonds labeled “organic and raw”, this packaging will be deceptive as ALL almonds sold commercially will be treated with high-temperature heat.

How To Beat The Ban

In October 2007, “Organic Pastures”, a family owned and operated dairy, farm and creamery will begin home delivery of organic, TRULY RAW, Butte and Padre variety almonds.

Organic Pastures is the superior company from which I buy raw milk, raw kefir, and raw cheese (they deliver an array of raw products or check stores like Whole Foods or Wild Oats in California ).

To reserve your raw almonds call Organic Pastures at 1-877-729-6455.

Prices begin at $20 for a 2lb bag and large orders are also accepted. What could be better than having one of the most nutritious, delicious and versatile nuts delivered tight to your door?!

Also, be sure to check www.organicpastures.com for informative articles about why organic, raw almonds are not only safe to eat, but extremely nutritious. You’ll also find enlightening information regarding the deceptive labeling practices that will be instituted by The California Almond Board.

If you hadn’t noticed, I’m totally bugged by the whole raw almond ban. Therefore, my pledge is to find EVERY high-quality, organic, raw almond source that I can and then relate them to you.

More power to you if you choose to buy heat treated or pasteurized almonds, but I want you to at least have a CHOICE where your nutrition is concerned.

Next on my agenda: a quality source for organic truly raw, almond butter. Life just won’t be the same without it!

Hear this California Almond Board - where there’s a will, there’s a truly raw almond!

<img title="Yoga Mama" alt=Health and Fitness Tips, Nutrition Tips, Health, Fitness Nutrition" src ="http://www.healthsundae.com/blog1/wp-content/images/vitarun.gif" align="left" />
In general, I don’t recommend supplements as a way to expedite weight loss.

Instead, I have always had great success following a natural, healthy approach based on moderate exercise, unprocessed, organic, whole foods, and stress-reduction techniques (one of which is NOT binge eating).

But, there are a few natural, safe and effective dietary supplements that are key to any weight loss and overall health plan.

Whether you are looking to reshape your body or working to maintain an already lean physique for a lifetime, one supplement worth investigating and investing in is Conjugated Linoleic Acid.

What Is Conjugated Linoleic Acid?

CLA is a fatty acid that is found in meat and dairy products. Evidence compiled over the last decade shows that besides being a powerful anti-oxidant CLA offers numerous health and weight loss benefits.

Benefits of CLA Include

- Increases metabolic rate

- Decreases abdominal fat

- Enhances muscle growth

- Lowers Cholesterol and triglycerides

- Lowers insulin resistance

- Reduces food-induced allergies

- Enhances immune function

- Effective in helping people with thyroid conditions lose weight without interfering with thyroid medications

Sorry, A Cheeseburger in Paradise Doesn’t Offer CLA Benefits

Unfortunately, milk shakes and burgers duo won’t supply sufficient CLA to be of any benefit- there simply is not enough CLA present in these sources. Supplements, however, are concentrated sources of CLA which allow you an affordable way to get an effective dose of CLA.

Where Do I Find Quality CLA?

Health food stores, GNC and online outlets like Drugstore.com carry CLA. I suggest using a patented brand to ensure that your supplement contains sufficient CLA to be effective.

I suggest “Tonalin” brand, it is the most researched, highest quality CLA. Look for “Tonalin” in 1,000mg capsule form.

How Much CLA Do I Need To Receive Benefits?

Studies show that to be effective 3.4g or 3400mg per day of CLA must be taken. So, if for example, you were to use the “Tonalin” capsules you’d need to take 4 capsules a day with meals.

Is CLA Safe?

Yes!

Some people have reported side effects such as slight nausea or stomach upset. These side effects were generally reduced when CLA was taken with milk or protein and also seemed to subside after 2 weeks of taking the supplement.

CLA Gives Results But It’s Not Magic Beans

Please don’t forget that a healthy, balanced diet combined with exercise is the only way to drop weight and keep it off for good. Although CLA can help jump start weight loss while offering additional health benefits, it can’t replace the lifestyle changes you need to make in order to live well for a lifetime. Sorry to be a buzz kill.

The good news is that in combination with proper diet and exercise, CLA CAN help you shed weight more quickly and then aid in keeping it off forever!

There are really no short cuts- lifestyle change is where it is at. Luckily, there are a few natural, safe “helpers” that do exist and I say exploit these buggers for all they’re worth!

CLA is a genuine weight loss tool that also offers health protection- take advantage of it!

Welcome to the August 27, 2007 edition of Health & Fitness Forum.

The purpose of this forum is to feature well-written articles that provide easy-to-implement tips and information on health, fitness, nutrition, weight loss, beauty and overall well being.

Too few people take the time to learn what it takes to be fit and healthy, and even fewer have the self discipline to stick with healthy eating and living practices. To make matters worse, traditional media outlets report far too much misinformation on what it takes to be healthy and fit. This forum is designed to make it easier for everyone to learn about and implement tips that will have a real impact on the quality of their lives.

<img title="Yoga Mama" alt=Health and Fitness Tips, Nutrition Tips, Health, Fitness Nutrition" src ="http://www.healthsundae.com/blog1/wp-content/images/rockstar.gif" align="left" />

In a recent post I told you about the adaptogenic health benefits from the supplemental herb Rhodiola Rosea.

Turns out Rhodiola can enhance sexual performance as well!

About the same time I wrote the Rhodiola post, my darling and virile husband started taking two hundred mg of Rhodeola Rosea (of Russian origin). The Hubs is a super-stressed out, Type-A, complete workaholic. Taking an adaptogenic tonifier like Rhodiola was intended to help his system cope with the mental and physical drain that sleep deprivation, travel and long hours at the office, can cause.

Within a few weeks of taking rhodiola (it can take about 2 months for benefits to be felt), he reported feeling more energetic throughout the day and I noticed he was no longer a boring, exhausted blob when he finally got home to see me. Seriously, it was great to have my fun-loving, energetic man back in the crib!

But then, this past weekend it was like, HEL-LO! An additional benefit of Rhodiola seemed to have um, arisen.

Rhodiola Enhances Libido:

It’s true! All the literature I have read has noted that Rhodiola Rosea can restore or increase libido in both men and women. For women Rhodiola can help out when libido is reduced due to menopause and hormone fluctuations.

It’s Not Viagra:

The Rhodiola Riser is not the same as the Viagra perm- erection (to me a four hour stint isn’t appealing anyhow) and it doesn’t just cause a sudden erection out of the blue. Instead, Rhodiola can actually stimulate desire and libido which leads to well, you can take it from there.

Be Careful What You Wish For:

I should have known Hub was enjoying additional feelings of friskiness when he actually ASKED me to buy more Rhodiola when he ran out. Usually, I am the one who is totally in charge of monitoring the “healthy stuff” in our household.

For example, at breakfast I will ask, “Are you still working on that bottle of 60 multi-vitamin capsules I got for you fifteen months ago?”

“Yes, I take one every morning!”, is the guaranteed reply.

But This! He LOVES this stuff! Strutting around, pinching my booty, he is so proud, so enamored with his amped up sexual prowess. I am in deep trouble. I have created my very own, live-in, horny monster.

Lucky for me I adore my man. Seeing him act like a spring chicken just brings a smile to my face. I am not sure if the extra energy Rhodiola affords him is simply restoring his energy in general, so that he has more to uh, “give” or, if the Rhodiola is in fact working directly on the old libido.

Either way, Rhodiola is a safe, effective way to add a little spring to your step and perhaps some other things as well.

sexual performance, Rhodiola, Libido, Viagra

Envious of that skinny chic who struts her bony behind past your cubicle every day as she wolfs down a gigantic Bear Claw?

<img title="Yoga Mama" alt=Health and Fitness Tips, Nutrition Tips, Health, Fitness Nutrition" src ="http://www.healthsundae.com/blog1/wp-content/images/skinny.gif" align="left" />Well, here’s some news that might comes as a surprise: just because she’s thin doesn’t mean she’s fit. Fact is, a size zero doesn’t mean she’s got any muscle, and fat-burning muscle is where it’s at.

Am I Healthy???

BMI (Body Mass Index):

BMI is a measurement of body fat based on a computation of your height and weigh. An effective way to estimate your overall health risks, go here for a quick BMI assessment.

BMI Doesn’t Tell The Whole Story:

More important than BMI is how much fat you have relative to your overall weight and WHERE that fat is on your body. The higher your fat percentage and the more fat found around your midsection, the more inflammatory chemicals called cytokines that circulate in your blood. Inflammation from cytokines are a cause of premature aging and make you more susceptible to cardiovascular disease, obesity and metabolic syndrome.

But Miss Skinny Looks So Good, How Can She Be Unhealthy?

Just because Skinny Bitch may look like runway material, it is possible to have a normal weight and BMI and still be obese. Percentage (relative to muscle) and placement of fat (you may not be able to see it but visceral fat still surrounds organs), may put a skinny woman at greater risk of disease than a woman who weighs more.

As inflammation from cytokines in the blood continue to accumulate through the years a skinny-fat woman’s chances of cardiovascular disease and diabetes increase as does her risk of packing on pounds after she hits a certain age (now, now, it is never nice to gloat).

Doesn’t Weighing Less Mean Less Fat?

Scale weight is deceptive. The truth is, muscle is denser than fat so if you have nice muscle tone you will probably weigh more than anyone would ever guess. In fact, a woman with muscle tone appears SMALLER than the scale might indicate because muscle is more compact than fat so you’ll look svelte even if you aren’t a 115lb skinny mini.

Remember, sacrificing muscle to see a certain number on the scale is NEVER a good idea. The more muscle you have the higher your metabolism – a wonderful thing!

I Still Hate The Skinny Girls:

Listen, I’m not asking you to put out a big Boo Hoo for all those skinny wenches. I mean, I understand it may seem better to be fat and look thin than the fat-fat combo most of us struggle to avoid. But, take comfort in the fact that even skinny girls should do regular cardiovascular exercise, weight train and eat balanced meals. A steady diet of Big Mac’s isn’t healthy for anyone– whether you wear a size two or not.

If you happen to be a skinny gal, be aware of that fact that your small frame may be hiding a HUGE health problem if you are not living a healthy lifestyle. Eating junk food and never lifting a dumbbell may have repercussions even if you never know what it is to struggle with the zipper on those size O Seven Jeans.

Take care of that lucky butt!!!

Not many people can resist the lure of a box of Thin Mints. You can blame your illicit cookie purchase on those endearing, imploring Scout faces all you want. Truth is, it don’t make a lick of difference who’s selling them - little girl, little monkey - whatever, a box of Tag A Longs is just plain tempting.

<img title="Great Athletic Wear" alt=Healthy foods" src ="http://www.healthsundae.com/blog1/wp-content/images/girlscoutcookie.gif" align="left" />Happy news: In celebration of their 90th year of selling drool-inducing cookies, Girl Scouts are approached something like health consciousness by removing most of the trans fats from their products. Key here is the word “most”.

In fact, “most” Girl Scout Cookies are still high in sugar, saturated fat and lots of artificial gunk. Plus, they are still not entirely free of trans fats. Definitely NOT items to be confused with health food. BUT - still a step in the right direction.

According to Girl Scouts of the USA Vice President Denise Pessich, changes were made to the cookies after the two bakeries that produce the goods found trans-fat alternatives that didn’t compromise the flavor, texture or shelf life. Shelf life? Anyone with the willpower to leave an unopened box of Thin Mints on the shelf probably wouldn’t buy them in the first place. I know I am not alone when I say that those little guys literally sing to me. Sing! My name!!!

Here’s the lowdown on the slim-down:

While most varieties have had MOST trans fats removed, technically the nasty stuff is still in there – labels still show partially hydrogenated vegetable oil.

Don’t be fooled - the FDA allows these cookies to be labeled as “zero trans fat” since they contain less than ½ gram per serving. Problem is, no one really eats only 1 serving unless they have had their taste buds surgically removed. For example, 4 Thin Mints, 2 Samosas or 2 Caramel deLites constitute a serving. Give or take a few Tag-A- Longs, the number ten is closer to what truly goes down the hatch each time I pickup a box.

Even if you are some kind of martyr who manages to stop munching at one serving, no way do you just toss the rest of that box away. Face it, you hog the rest down over the next few days. This means you (or your kids) could consume several grams of trans fat by the time you polish off the box.

This is not just me being neurotic – it is significant-big-time physicians, like Dr. Mehmet Oz (Oprah’s boy) urging us to eat none, nada, zero trans fats - EVER - since even small amounts are unhealthy. This stuff accumulates quickly and sticks around in our systems.

It’s great that The Girl’s are on the right track. But be aware that “zero trans fats” is deceptive. Don’t just stick your head back in the sand (or the box) and delude yourself until you hit the end of that cellophane sleeve.

Every time our bodies are subjected to stress - whether it comes from dealing with an A-hole boss, road rage or even a demanding workout regime, stress causes inflammation in our cells that leads directly to disease and premature aging.

<img title="Rhodiola" alt=Healthy supplements" src ="http://www.healthsundae.com/blog1/wp-content/images/monkherbs.gif" align="left" />So, what can you do to stay young, hip and gorgeous forever? How do ensure you’ll have the kind of looks that will get you carded even when you fifty?

The answer may lie in a unique group of herbal supplements called “adaptogens”, of which Rhodiola Rosea is a frontrunner.

WHAT CAN AN ADAPTOGEN SUPPLEMENT DO FOR ME???

-Increase availability of energy during the day

-Reduce feelings of stress that lead to premature aging

-Accelerate the healing process

-Increase endurance

-Generate greater mental alertness

-Support deeper, more restful sleep

-Improve sports performance and resistance to muscle strain

WHAT IS RHODIOLA ROSEA???

Rhodiola rosea (of Russian origin), was discovered in 1947, but just recently has started to gain widespread popularity in Europe and the United States.

Health gurus are now touting Rhodiola Rosea as an outstanding, inexpensive and safe adaptogen - one that can help keep you young by alleviating the stress on your body.

Be sure to look for a RUSSIAN Rhodiola rosea formula. Chinese and Tibetan Rhodiola are ineffective because they lack “Rosavins” which is the key active ingredient in Rhodiola.

WHO SHOULD TAKE RHODIOLA???

After undergoing extensive clinical studies, the verdict is that is Rhodiola Rosea is one of the safest supplements you can take. At the recommended dose, there are no side effects like the over-excitement that can occur with herbs like Ginseng, and no drug interactions have been shown.

But please – no Rhodiola if you are preggers or breast feeding,

HOW DO I TAKE RHODIOLA ???

-Look for a product with at least 3% rosavins and 1% or less salidroside

-Recommended dosage is 200 to 600 mg a day

-Take Rhodiola in the morning since it increases alertness (unless you dig watching Fresh Prince of Bel Air re-runs at 3 am)

-Note that higher than recommended doses can cause drowsiness or have a sedative effect

-Excessively high doses (over 2,000 mg), can cause insomnia. Uh, who takes this much of anything anyway???

Unless you live in a full-time cotton-candy, balloons, and rainbow utopia, you deal with stress on a daily basis. But why let these unavoidable stressors sabotage your good health?

Rhodiola is a safe and effective way to maintain your vibrance and slow down the aging process.
